Not winning can be tolerated if there is the appearance of growth and improvement. But the 2011 season has not heralded anything that can be considered growth and there certainly doesn’t seem to be many areas that a fan can point to as improvement. With rookie head coach Pat Shurmur looking dazed and confused on the sidelines, there is reason to speculate that he will not return as the head coach next season.

The mistakes, overlooks, and down right inept play calling are mounting against Pat Shurmur.

Yahoo Sports article Six the hard way: Which coaches might be next on the chopping block? list Shurmur as possibly on his way out, right below Andy Reid who would certainly look great standing on the Cleveland sidelines.

“The Coach: Andy Reid, Philadelphia Eagles
The Record: 5-8 in 2011 (123-81-1 in 13th season with Eagles)
The Case For: Arguably the most successful coach in franchise history; has a proven track record as a brilliant designer of offenses; has a strong bond with many current players and a great deal of respect around the league.
The Case Against: Defense has fallen apart since the passing of former defensive coordinator Jim Johnson; has generally possessed more of an offensive viewpoint than the more overall view generally required of a head coach.
The Verdict: Reid might be as likely to leave of his own volition. It’s unlikely that the Eagles would fire him, especially if they finish strong. But it could certainly be argued that Reid may be asked to make changes, specifically at defensive coordinator, where Juan Castillo has been a disaster. We bet that he’ll give it another shot in Philly with a few attendant changes.”

“The Coach: Pat Shurmur, Cleveland Browns
The Record: 4-9 in 2011 (4-9 in 1st year with Browns)
The Case For: He’s a first-year coach with a franchise that is trying to rebuild. Team president Mike Holmgren, a former head coach, hates to fire coaches. Personnel decisions beyond his control are deciding his fate to a large degree.
The Case Against: The Colt McCoy concussion issue is becoming an embarrassment; Shurmur hasn’t seemed to tie himself to any development of McCoy as he did with Sam Bradford last year; and Mike Holmgren did eventually say good-bye to Eric Mangini.
The Verdict: Shurmur gets another year, but on a very short leash. And if an attractive former Holmgren acolyte like Reid or Marty Mornhinweg pops loose, Shurmur might be on the outside looking in.”

In many fans eyes, the rookie head coach experiments have failed over the last 10 years. It’s time to land the head coach with a proven track record.

While the group usually performs as a quartet, they actually have up to twelve singers at each park, plus occasional substitutes. This allows them to have multiple quartets performing separately or to combine and form a larger ensemble. Membership has changed over the years as various singers have retired or died and new ones have been brought in to succeed them. Several of the Dapper Dans are members of the Barbershop Harmony Society.

You can be serenaded by the Dans at the Magic Kingdom in Florida while having your hair cut in a real, working barbershop on Main Street there. The Dans at Hong Kong Disneyland stroll up and down Main Street from Town Square. The Dans at Disneyland can be seen on their Schwinn custom 4-seater bicycle (commissioned by Walt Disney himself) and in various locations around Main Street.

In the Magic Kingdom, Disney World, the Dapper Dans perform nine sets a day, seven days a week. They can be found on the horse-drawn trolley in the morning, and all over Main Street USA during the afternoon. At 5pm, the Dans join the Main Street Philharmonic and the Magic Kingdom Security Color Guard for the Flag Retreat Ceremony.

Another unique part of Dapper Dans lore is the fact that they use Deagan Organ Chimes as part of the act. Each of the eight chimes has three octaves of a single note, comprising a C scale. The Organ Chimes were made by the J.C. Deagan Company in Chicago, IL around 1901.

The ballclub also announced that it did pick up starting pitcher Fausto Carmona’s club option, which is worth $7 million.

Sizemore’s option would have been $9 million, but the Indians instead elected to buy his contract out for $500,000.

Sizemore, 29, was once headed to an outstanding career, but injuries have derailed him the past several seasons. He was an All-Star three straight seasons (2006-2008) and widely known as one of the best all-around players in baseball. He could hit for power, steal bases and play great defense in center. In the past three seasons, however, Sizemore has only managed 210 games and his numbers suffered with the injuries as well. He hit just .224/.285/.422 in 71 games in 2011. It will be interesting to see the market for Sizemore. It’s entirely possible he can still return to elite form, but he carries some significant risk as well. The best guess is a one-year offer full of incentives is what he has to take.

Carmona, 27, was 7-15 with a 5.25 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 109 strikeouts in 188 2/3 innings in 2011. He was an All-Star in 2010 and finished fourth in Cy Young voting back in 2007. Carmona is now signed through 2012 with club options for 2013 and 2014.

They have decide on their 2012 options.
Sizemore option is for nearly nine-million dollars. In this era of baseball this is not a huge amount of money, but is it worth it?
Grady Sizemore has only reached 100 games played per season, one time in the past three years! Sizemore has also not reached 500 or more at bats since the 2008 season. Hardly the picture of reliability. Grady has had 5 surgeries in three years.
He hit .224 last season, with 10 home runs and 32 runs driven in. He also struck out 85 times, while not stealing a single base, an element of his game that made him dynamic in the past.
Sure, nine-million for the Sizemore of old is a steal, but lately its been Cleveland getting swindled. Sizemore has hardly been the player he was at the beginning of his career and the Indians have suffered for it. Grady does have an upside, his trade value. A nine million dollar contract would make him an attractive player to larger market teams, with the hope that he can get back in form. To pickup the option and test the trade waters would be better then cutting him loose and getting nothing in return. They could always sign him and see how he starts the season, before attempting to send him off before the trade deadline.
Whatever the Tribe decides to do, this is just one of the many issues the club needs to address to take the next step forward towards a playoff birth.

Instead of focusing on getting the league back up and running the star players are going on tour. Dubbed the “World All-Star Classic” the top stars are going to be play six games in two weeks on four different continents. No doubt these game will feature very little defense, high scores and endless dunks.

Players will be paid for their services.

Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, Dwyane Wade and Kevin Durant will headline the roster of 18 all-star players, sources said.
The remaining 14 players will be announced Wednesday. LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudemire, Blake Griffin, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Carlos Boozer, Tyson Chandler, Steve Nash, Kevin Love, Rajon Rondo and Chris Kaman are among the candidates.
2010 NBA MVP Derrick Rose and Russell Westbrook have said they will not be particpating in these games. “The scheduling was just too tough,” said Rose,

The first game will be played in Jose Miguel Agrelot Coliseum in Puerto Rice on October 30th. Other games include stops in London, Macau and Australia.

Breakdowns on special teams had the Cleveland Browns searching for answers, and Josh Cribbs questioning his coach’s decisions to keep him on the sideline on kick coverage.

Cribbs promised to refocus his efforts on special teams coverage — and not offense — after the Oakland Raiders returned a kickoff and faked a field goal for a score to hand Cleveland a 24-17 loss Sunday.

“I’m not being used to the point where I can really help this team,” said Cribbs, upset he had only two catches for 30 yards and was targeted only five times. “I’m a dynamic special teams player. I need to refocus on how I got into the league, playing special teams, making tackles, doing what I do, doing my part.”

The Browns might need all the help they can get on special teams.

Jacoby Ford returned a kickoff 101 yards and Kevin Boss caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from punter Shane Lechler on a fake field goal, both shifting the momentum to the Raiders in the first game in Oakland since the death of longtime owner Al Davis.

The Browns (2-3) also lost running Peyton Hillis to a left hamstring injury in the first quarter and linebacker Scott Fujita to a concussion in the second half. Hillis, who was hopeful he only pulled a muscle, said he will have an MRI on Monday. Fujita’s status is uncertain.

Colt McCoy completed just 21 of 45 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns, including a 12-yarder to Mohamed Massaquoi that cut it to 24-17 with 1:06 remaining after Raiders coach Hue Jackson bypassed a chip-shot field goal to go for it unsuccessfully on fourth-and-1 from the 5. The Browns recovered the onside kick, but were unable to generate a first down with consecutive incompletions.

“It came pretty difficult for us,” McCoy said. “You talk about a lot of things that kind of kill you. You’d like to get over those and gain some momentum. But today, it was a struggle with things. They’re coming off a win on the road and they’re at home and have some momentum, and we didn’t match that at the beginning of the game.”

While the Browns couldn’t overcome a key offensive injury, the Raiders managed through one.

Quarterback Jason Campbell was knocked out late in the first half with a broken collarbone. Campbell landed hard on his shoulder after being hit at the end of a scramble by Cleveland linebackers Chris Gocong and Fujita.

The Raiders (4-2) offense struggled once Kyle Boller took over for Campbell. But Boller did complete a 27-yard swing pass to Ford that set up Sebastian Janikowski’s 48-yard field goal that made it 17-7 late in the third quarter.

Oakland then took over again at the Cleveland 25 after a botched handoff between McCoy and Montario Hardesty. That’s when Jackson again successfully went to his book of tricks. On fourth down from the 35, Lechler — the holder — threw to a wide-open Boss in the flat and Boss raced to the end zone for the score that made it 24-7.

All of it had Cribbs peeved.

“We lost by a touchdown. The production means special teams will have an impact,” Cribbs said. “We had the momentum of scoring and then they return the kickoff. I know what it does when I run a kickoff back. That changed the momentum.

“My role on offense, when I weigh it to special teams, it’s very insignificant on offense,” Cribbs added. “So I need to refocus more on special teams and not worry about getting the ball on offense. … If they want to give me the ball on offense, then I’ll play offense.”

It was an emotional day at the Coliseum with many old-time Raiders coming back to honor Davis, the man who had been the face of the franchise for nearly a half-century before dying Oct. 8 of an undisclosed illness at age 82.

The most poignant moment came during a halftime ceremony with dozens of former players standing in a circle around the Raiders emblem at midfield. Super Bowl-winning coach John Madden then lit a caldron on the plaza level in the corner of the stadium with the public address announcer saying the fire will “burn forever” for fans to remember Davis.

On a day full of tributes, the one Davis would have appreciated most is the one on the scoreboard as the Raiders beat the Browns to win consecutive games for the first time this season and move two games over .500 for the first time since winning the AFC title in 2002.

That lead proved to be enough for the Raiders, who harassed McCoy and held Cleveland’s running game to 65 yards.

After a pregame video tribute and moment of silence for Davis, the Raiders started fast. They forced a three-and-out to start the game with safety Matt Giordano sacking McCoy with a blitz on third down. Oakland them methodically moved 88 yards in 15 plays, converting four third-down opportunities and scoring on McFadden’s 4-yard run.

The Raiders were moving again when Campbell slid headfirst on a scramble and lost the ball. That led to Cleveland’s first score on McCoy’s 1-yard TD pass to Alex Smith.

Oakland answered with Ford’s 101-yard kickoff return — his fourth TD return in less than two years as a pro.

“Typically, if you have one special teams score, that’s enough to get you nailed,” Browns coach Pat Shurmur said. “And we had two.”

The Browns were driving toward the east end zone for what would have been the winning score. Browns’ wide receiver Quincy Morgan caught a pass for a first down on 4th and 1. McAulay did not actually move to his buzzer until well after Couch had snapped and spiked the ball, but replay official Bill Reynolds would later claim that McAulay merely did not react in time to stop the spike play.In reviewing the play, McAulay determined that Morgan never had control of the ball, thus the pass was incomplete, and the Jaguars were awarded the ball. However, fans in the “Dawg Pound” began throwing plastic beer bottles and other objects directed at and striking players and officials. McAulay then declared the game over and sent the teams to the locker rooms. NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue called the game supervisor to override McAulay’s decision, sending the players back onto the field after a thirty-minute delay, where the Jaguars ran out the last seconds under a hail of debris.
